See How To Dress Smart To An Interview – As the popular saying goes ” The way you dress is the way you’ll be addressed”. First impression matters a lot, before you are even asked anything, your dressing will be observed first. So before you say a single word to the interviewer, you have already made an impression based on how you’re dressed. The guidelines given here are commonly accepted as appropriate for interviews but i will advice you still do further research. Every company/Organization has a different dress code; how you dress at the job may have very little to do with how you dress for an interview. Read below and grab one or two vital information i have for you.
I have decided to divide them into two segment. i.e:
Dress code for Men and Dress code for Women
This is the right way men should dress.
- You should dress in a manner that is professionally appropriate to the position for which you are applying. In almost all cases, this means wearing a suit. It is rarely appropriate to “dress down” for an interview, regardless of company dress code policy. When in doubt, go conservative. Make sure it is neatly pressed and avoid colour rioting.
- It is expected of you to wear a suit for interviews. “Suit” means the works: a matching jacket and pants, dress shirt, tie, coordinating socks and dress shoes. A dark-coloured suit with light coloured shirt should be your best option.
- Your suit should be comfortable and should fit you well so that you look and act your best. It shouldn’t be oversized and it shouldn’t be too tight. Like i said earlier, make sure you avoid loud colours and flashy ties. Use moderate colours. Moderation is the key point here
- Your clothes should be neat, clean, and well pressed. If you don’t have an iron, either buy one or be prepared to visit the dry-cleaners often. I remember one of the interviews i had to attend before i started this blog, i had to walk some miles to press my clothes in a friend’s house. Shower or bathe in the morning of the interview. Wear nice deodorant. Don’t wear cologne or aftershave. You don’t want to smell overpowering or worse.
- Make sure you have fresh breath. Brush your teeth before you leave for the interview, and don’t eat before the interview. I repeat DON’T EAT. Its for your own good.
This is very important as you don’t know how your system might react to the food you will eat before going out so as not to disturb you will facing your interviewers. So it’s advisable you go empty if you know what i mean.
6. Your hair should be neat, clean, and conservative. Make sure you get a clean cut not on the day of the interview but a day before the interview.
7. Your Shoes should be well-polished and in good condition, not scuffed or run-down at the heels. Make sure your belt match the shoes. Be sure to shave a day before the interview as trying to shave in the morning of the interview might take your time especially if you have to go to the saloon, even if you don’t ordinarily shave every day. If you have a full beard or moustache it should be trimmed and neat-looking.
Ladies; here is how
- Just like the men, wearing a suit is appropriate. You can wear it with a skirt or pants. When in doubt, be more conservative. Just make sure you look good.
- Make sure you are very comfortable in the suit. Just make sure it fits you well; if your waistband is cutting you in half or your jacket is too tight, you won’t look or act your best. You may want to find a tailor to adjust a suit you already own.
- Interview suits should be simple and dark in colour or preferably ash. Anything tight, bright, short, or sheer should absolutely be avoided. Knee-length skirts are suggested. Very long skirts, while modest, are also considered too trendy for an interview.
- Your Make-up and nail polish should be moderate; shades that are neutral to your skin tone are generally advisable. Avoid bright or unusual colours or very long nails.
- Wear a conservative blouse with your suit. Do not wear bright colours, animal prints, or anything lacy, sheer, or low-cut.
- Keep your jewellery and hair accessories to a minimum, and stick to those that are not flashy, distracting, or shiny. One ring per hand is best and that’s if you are married. If you are single, there’s no need wearing a ring at all.
- Make sure your shoes are conservative and fairly low-heeled. They should be in reasonably good condition, not scuffed or run-down at the heels.
Don’t wear shoes with an open toe or back; any shoes you would wear on a date or to a club are probably inappropriate.
8. Your hose should be neutral (matched to your skin tone). Make sure the heels are not dyed black from your shoes and that there are no snags or runs. Only use the nail polish trick in an emergency; you may want to carry an extra pair of hose with you instead.
